Badwater Basin: Death Valley Microbe Thrives There
Discovery may lead to novel biotech and nanotech uses
December 22, 2011

Nevada, the “Silver State,” is well-known for mining precious metals.

But scientists Dennis Bazylinski and colleagues at the University of Nevada Las Vegas (UNLV) do a different type of mining. They sluice through every water body they can find, looking for new forms of microbial magnetism. In a basin named Badwater on the edge of Death Valley National Park, Bazylinski and researcher Christopher Lefèvre hit pay dirt. Lefèvre is with the French National Center of Scientific Research and University of Aix-Marseille II.

In this week’s issue of the journal Science, Bazylinski, Lefèvre and others report that they identified, isolated and grew a new type of magnetic bacteria that could lead to novel biotech and nanotech uses. Magnetotactic bacteria are simple, single-celled organisms that are found in almost all bodies of water. As their name suggests, they orient and navigate along magnetic fields like miniature swimming compass needles. This is due to the nano-sized crystals of the minerals magnetite or greigite they produce. The presence of these magnetic crystals makes the bacteria and their internal crystals–called magnetosomes–useful in drug delivery and medical imaging.

The research was funded by the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF), the U.S. Department of Energy and the French Foundation for Medical Research. “The finding is significant in showing that this bacterium has specific genes to synthesize magnetite and greigite, and that the proportion of these magnetosomes varies with the chemistry of the environment,” said Enriqueta Barrera, program director in NSF’s Division of Earth Sciences.

While many magnetite-producing bacteria can be grown and easily studied, Bazylinski and his team were the first to cultivate a greigite-producing species. Greigite is an iron sulfide mineral, the equivalent of the iron oxide magnetite.

“Because greigite-producing bacteria have never been isolated, the crystals haven’t been tested for the types of biomedical and other applications that currently use magnetite,” said Bazylinski. “Greigite is an iron sulfide that may be superior to magnetite in some applications due to its slightly different physical and magnetic properties. Now we have the opportunity to find out.”

Researchers found the greigite-producing bacterium, called BW-1, in water samples collected more than 280 feet below sea level in Badwater Basin. Lefèvre and Bazylinski later isolated and grew it leading to the discovery that BW-1 produces both greigite and magnetite. A detailed look at its DNA revealed that BW-1 has two sets of magnetosome genes, unlike other such bacteria, which produce only one mineral and have only one set of magnetosome genes. This suggests that the production of magnetite and greigite in BW-1 is likely controlled by separate sets of genes. That could be important in the mass production of either mineral for specific applications.

According to Bazylinski, the greigite-producing bacteria represent a new, previously unrecognized group of sulfate-reducing bacteria that “breathe” the compound sulfate rather than oxygen as most living organisms do.

“With how much is known about sulfate-reducing bacteria, it’s surprising that no one has described this group,” he said.

Working with Bazylinski and Lefèvre on the project are David Pignol of the French National Center of Scientific Research and University of Aix-Marseille II; Nicolas Menguy of Pierre and Marie Curie University, France; Fernanda Abreu and Ulysses Lins of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; Mihaly Pósfai of the University of Pannonia, Hungary; Tanya Prozorov of Ames Laboratory, Iowa; and Richard Frankel of California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo.

Hi there, Luxor does indeed have Wi-Fi, and yes it does cost money. Basically it’s a mandatory “resort fee”.

For $12.95 a night you get:
Unlimited local, toll free and domestic long distance calls
Daily newspaper
Daily bottled water delivery (two bottles per day)
Daily admission to the fitness center (does not include use of spa facilities)
Internet access in room

Hope that helps.

And if you booked your room already, check http://www.mycheapvegas.com to see more Las Vegas hotel specials. You can always cancel your room reservations and rebook if you find a cheaper rate, cheers!

is it true that the colorado river that gives las vegas water is drying out because of global warming?

water maker answers:

Yes.

“For the Colorado River basin, our results show that climate change over the next century as predicted by PCM would lead to a situation where total system demand (water deliveries plus reservoir evaporation) would exceed (decreasing) reservoir inflows, bringing about a substantial degradation in system performance.”

http://www.hydro.washington.edu/pub/niklas/Christensen_CC_final_0801.pdf

This study found that Colorado River flow will decrease 18% by 2050 primarily due to global warming. Here’s another good resource on the subject from the Colorado River Water Conservation District:

http://www.crwcd.org/media/uploads/CO_River_Uncertain_Future.pdf

Increasing demand plays a role as well as the population in the US southwest increases, but the bottom line is that global warming is already contributing to increasing drought in the region, which will only get worse:

http://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/Features/GlobalWarming/Images/modeled_precipitation_ipcc.gif

“there is a broad consensus among climate models that this region [US Southwest] will dry in the 21st century and that the transition to a more arid climate should already be under way. If these models are correct, the levels of aridity of the recent multiyear drought or the Dust Bowl and the 1950s droughts will become the new climatology of the American Southwest within a time frame of years to decades.”

http://www.sciencemag.org/cgi/content/short/316/5828/1181

The USGS under the Bush Administration arrived at the same conclusion:

“In the Southwest, for example, the models project a permanent drying by the mid-21st century that reaches the level of aridity seen in historical droughts, and a quarter of the projections may reach this level of aridity much earlier.”

http://downloads.climatescience.gov/sap/sap3-4/sap3-4-final-report-ch3.pdf

So basically we’re experiencing both increasing demand and decreasing supply for the Colorado River due to global warming and associated climate change. It’s bad news for the US Southwest.

water maker answers:

The female mosquitos are the ones that bite-but not to feed their young but to obtain enough protein to make eggs. Yours could be male mosquitos or they could be something else like midges or something. Perhaps they don’t fancy you.

1. Spray the house regularly with lysol to stop any airborn germs,
2. Spray any toys that the children may have been playing with with “lysol hard surfaces”
3. Make sure everyone washes their hands before touching their face or eating anything
4. To be on the safe side you and your family should start taking vitamines or their is this drinkable vitamine out call Airborn…it’s really good and works wonders, I am a preschool teacher and whenever the kids are sick at school I come home a mix Airborn with water and drink it down, I do this for a day or two and hardly ever get sick, you can purchase AirBorn at Walmart!

Just because you and your family haven’t shown any signs of being sick dosen’t mean you guys can’t get it. I didn’t catch strep from my nephews untill about 2 days after they were completely over it. The strep germ can lingor in the air and live on surfaces for 2 weeks! So LYSOL LYSOL LYSOL!

Maybe a mercenary plutocratic predatory few and their admirers and followers think believe and expect that the need to preserve the environment by suppressing the reproductive success of the many justifies concentration of wealth of the global culture into the hands of a mercenary plutocratic predatory few. I think, believe and expect if sex for occupational, recreational and homosexual purposes were to become as acceptable in our global culture as sex for procreative purposes and sexual education were provided to the many that made these practices safer then there might not be a need to check the reproductive success of the many with psychotic extremes of poverty for the many and wealth for the few. With the support of education, entertainment and leadership that leads us to have the highest esteem of self and world we can possibly imagine, I think, believe and expect that we would be motivated to behave like friendly, homotolerant, peace makers; prevent the global culture from falling victim to apocalyptic self fulfilling prophecies; spare the environment from destruction by a war on terror fought by spreading terror in war; and better meet human demands for the necessities of life: breathable air, drinkable water, productive land and available sunlight.

Conservatives might argue that psychotic socio economic extremes of poverty for the many and wealth for the few are necessary to preserve the environment from pollution, deforestation, desertification, and desolation of the biosphere that would result if a more equitable share of the wealth of the global culture were given to the many. Conservatives might like to claim that growth of the population of the many is suppressed by concentration of the wealth of the global culture into the hands of the mercenary plutocratic predatory few, and thereby a balance is created in the body consuming biosphere between predator and prey. As a liberal, I challenge the idea that this concentration of wealth into the hands of the mercenary plutocratic predatory few is necessary to preserve the environment from desolation, degradation and destruction by the many. I see the dominance of the global culture by Abrahamic religions as a major contributing factor to the explosive growth of human population in recent history. I think, believe and expect that if sex for occupational, recreational, and homosexual purposes were deemed by more ideological authorities to be an acceptable and honorable alternative to sex for procreative purposes; then human population would naturally stablize at a level that would provide the best outcomes for the human and natural environments both now and into the indefinite future.

Is global warming real or some vast left wing conspiracy?

water maker answers:

Lester E Brown is the director and founder of the global institute of Environment in the United states .he has compiled a report based on all the satalite information available from NASA,and all the information that has
come from Universities and American embassies WORLD WIDE ,
his little book–a planet under stress , Plan B has been trans lated into 50 languages and won the best book award in 2003.

Clorofluorocarbons and gases that are released into the atmosphere by car exausts, non biodegradable materials
chief causes for global warming are the destruction of the ozone and excessive carbon production ,because we have so many cars and so much land is being deforrested

other reasons are the burning of rubbish especially tires and plastic, and the exessive use of aerosprays which release gasses these gasses built up .

Because we are a closed system (an enclosed package drifting in space)the trapped gasses heat up and produce the green house effect.

Because of the green house effect and the desertification this planet is heating up.
Each degree rise in temperature signifies 10% crop loss

the trees produce the air that we need to breathe.
Deforestation must be stopped before desertification goes out of control and consumes the planet.the trees absorb carbon emisions ,which is poison to us and they produce oxygen which we need to breathe.

The sea does as well but this is limited to winter periods how ever if the waters also heat up ,the seas will absorb less than ususal and we create more and more

DESERTIFICATION
the sahara is growing by 7 kilometres every day.
Two major desserts in northern china are growing together making one giant dessert and, causing dust storms so making thousands of people refugese

the trees evaporate a mist which ,which protects us from the strong rays of the sun .

The planet is drying out at an alarming rate.

In the days of the dinasaurs this planet was under an aquiferus manta ,a mist that covered the entire earth ,and there were no desserts .
Count how many there are today, and all of them are as a result of mans actions.
The sahara used to be forrests
arabia ,irak ,iran used to be fertile lands in biblical times
Bad agricultural practises is turning vast teritories into desserts ,because of over grazing and the exessive pumping of carbon aquifiers ,the surface aquifiers already having been depleted.
And the use of fertilisers and heavy machinery that compacts the ground which raises the salt in the soil.

It is a vicious circle of chain effects
more and more CO2,,and less and less factors that obsorb
and hotter and hotter.

AND AS A RESULT WE HAVE LESS AND LESS DRINKABLE WATER

I will give you a general answer that will cover your question and a little bit more.
Lester E Brown is the director and founder of the global institute of Environment in the United states .he has compiled a report based on all the satalite information available from NASA,and all the information that has come from Universities and American embassies WORLD WIDE ,
his little book Plan B has been trans lated into 50 languages and won the best book award in 2003.

So he knows something and i have added a couple of things that i know
Clorofluorocarbons and gases that are released into the atmosphere by car exausts, non biodegradable materials
chief causes for global warming are the destruction of the ozone and excessive carbon production ,because we have so many cars and so much land is being deforrested
other reasons are the burning of rubbish especially tires and plastic, and the exessive use of aerosprays which release gasses these gasses built up ,and because we are a closed system (an enclosed package drifting in space)the trapped gasses heat up and produce the green house effect.

Because of the green house effect and the desertification this planet is heating up
Each degree rise in temperature signifies 10% crop loss

the trees produce the air that we need to breathe.

He is one of my Heroes .i place him under many of my answers as a knowledgeble source for more information.
I dont think he is here himself
his book Plan b a planet under stress is under so many of my answers .
But at least one of his colleges is here ,he contacted me

this here below is half from Lester

DEFORRESTATION if it continues ,is that we could end up looking like Mars.Without an atmosphere ,without water, without air, with out life

the forrests make most of the water that we can drink or use for plant growth(sweet water)
some is condensed from the sea but that reaches only the coastel aereas .
The bulk ,comes from the forests ,and the rivers come from the rainfall which comes from the trees ,
and the trees with precipitation, feed the rivers when it is not raining and keep them running all year round.

If we kill all the trees,we kill the rivers .we kill the rain. We kill us.
The trees also absorb the heat in the day and heat up the place in the night ,so they keep the temperature confertable to live in.

In the dessert the nights are freezing cold and during the days you burn up

CARBON MONOXIDE
the trees absorb carbon emisions ,which is poison to us and they produce oxygen which we need to breathe.

So in short the trees produce the air that we need to breathe.
They also produce wood which is usefull and a wide range of food such as fruits

deforestation must be stopped before desertification goes out of control and consumes the planet.

DESERTIFICATION
the sahara is growing by 7 kilometres every day.
Two major desserts in northern china are growing together making one giant dessert and, causing dust storms so making thousands of people refugeese

the trees evaporate a mist which ,which protects us from the strong rays of the sun .

Count how many there are today, and all of them are as a result of mans actions.
The sahara used to be forrests
arabia ,irak ,iran used to be fertile lands in biblical times
Ghengas Kahn burned all the forrests here and filled the well with water and so turning vast lands into dessert.

Bad agricultural practises is turning vast teritories into desserts ,because of over grazing and the exessive pumping of carbon aquifiers ,the surface aquifiers already having been depleted.
And the use of fertilisers and heavy machinery that compacts the ground which raises the salt in the soil.
Modern agriculture today is doing the same as ghengas kahn but in much bigger territories.

WATERSHORTAGE
each year 70 million more people are consuming water but this is ,but a small part of what agriculture uses.

It is predicted that the wars of the future will be for water.
The water we got in most populated places must be treated or purified before it is acceptable for human consumption.

In Portugal and soutern Spain ,as in many places, wine is cheaper than water.Which would explain the many drunk people there

we are living in a bubble economy and when the bubble bursts
food prices will sky rocket, and so will the price of water.

The wars of the future will be for water

GLOBAL WARMING

because of the green house effect and the desertification this planet is heating up
Each degree rise in temperature signifies 10% crop loss

In portugal remains of Roman villas have been discovered 3/4 of a mile in the sea,and in one town the locals say that the sea is eating their town ,in recent years the Dona Philipa golf cours has lost the 16th and 17th hole which have fallen of the cliffs unto the beach.

In California and Florida rising seas have flooded arable land that has been lost
so far only a few millions acres in total globaly ,but this will speed up with the increasing global warming.

WHY IS THE OCEAN SALTY?

I kind of understand that the minerals at the ocean floor dissolve and make it salty. But why are lakes freshwater and the oceans so condensed with salt? How do the lakes get water that is fresh? I just don’t understand how we aren’t able to find a way to filter ocean water to make it drinkable when the lakes get the water filtered somehow.

water maker answers:

Salt in the ocean comes from rocks on land. The rain that falls on the land contains some dissolved carbon dioxide from the surrounding air. This causes the rainwater to be slightly acidic due to carbonic acid (which forms from carbon dioxide and water). The rain erodes the rock and the acid breaks down the rocks and carries it along in a dissolved state as ions. The ions in the runoff are carried to the streams and rivers to the ocean. Many of the dissolved ions are used by organisms in the ocean and are removed from the water. Others are not used up and are left for long periods of time where their concentrations increase over time.
The two ions that are present most often in seawater are chloride and sodium. These two make up over 90% of all dissolved ions in seawater. By the way, the concentration of salt in seawater (salinity) is about 35 parts per thousand. In other words, about 35 of 1,000 (3.5%) of the weight of seawater comes from the dissolved salts; in a cubic mile of seawater the weight of the salt, as sodium chloride, would be about 120 million tons.
By some estimates, if the salt in the ocean could be removed and spread evenly over the Earth’s land surface it would form a layer more than 500 feet (166 m) thick, about the height of a 40-story office building.

Yes or No. Do you think deforestation is slowly killing the planet?

water maker answers:

Deforestation is definitely killing our planet. Less acreage and natural forest torn down means less oxygen taken out of the air for us to breathe, as well as less oxygen to balance out the co2 and methane in the atmosphere. As the forests are cut down, there become less land to grow food on to feed the world’s starving population and one less place to look at nice woodlands that nature intended to be there. The problem: capitalism, and the greedy unregulated land developers that want nothing more to make a profit on destroying our beautiful planet.

The solution: a vegetarian diet. A cow can eat 5 lbs. Of grain and vegetables, as well as 5,000 gallons of water, for every one pound of meat produced. That adds up QUICKLY. Another thing that is dying on our planet is our fresh water sources. As the population climbs towards 6.5 billion and the resources (including water) allotted to each of us gets even smaller, we must realize how important it is to conserve what water (less than 2% of water on our planet is drinkable fresh water). One of the most polluting causes of water pollution is factory farming. As waste, chemicals, etc. Are leaked into nearby water sources, fish habitats become devastated, and less fresh water is safe to drink.

There is a healthy substitute for everything available at the nearest natural food store or supermarket. From Purely Decadent, Soy Dream, and Tofutti brand ice cream, to Morningstar, Boca, and Gardenburger brand meatless burgers. For the small amount of fresh water and land we have left, go vegetarian!

Insulated mugs: Vacuum insulation vs double wall?

Some camping mugs are double walled with a vacuum between the two walls. Some mugs are double walled but there is air between the walls. Is there a significant (noticeable) difference between the insulating properties of a double wall with vacuum and a double wall with air between?

I.e., If I have two double walled mugs which are identical other than one is vacuum and one is not, and I fill them both full of boiling water, will the water in the vacuum mug stay hotter longer, to the point where it’s significant – to the point where you will notice.

Can you vacuum seal cooked rice and not keep refridgerated?

I have a vacuum sealer and I want to cook rice seal it and take it on extended pack trips where there will be no refrigeration. This will help cut down on fuel.

Trader Joes, Kashi, Uncle Bens, etc… sell bags of cooked rice this way. Does anyone know if this is safe to do it yourself or are they adding a preservative?

I would also like to do this with cooked lentils and beans? any suggestions.

How safe is it to then boil bags to reheat. Is there BPA in the plastic?
If I can reheat in plastic, it reduces any clean up and gives me drinkable water or hot tea! Again reducing fuel.

Thank you for an tips or suggestion.

water maker answers:

Excellent Question.
The vacuum sealer bags I get are food safe, for boiling in the bags to reheat, or thaw and heat in boiling water then pour out and eat. As for the BPA I don’t know. Honestly, taking out all the air should preserve the food from the bacteria, if you bag and seal properly and when the food is boiling hot. Waiting for it to cool first (uncovered) leaves it open to the air which has bacteria, yeast etc in the air we breathe. That is all natural and our bodies can with-stand that, but in the case of food, it will cause that airborne stuff to cling to the food and can cause early spoilage.
Theoretically, the complete and proper vacuum sealing of the foods should protect the food from spoilage. Sometimes I don’t allow enough extra bag (trying to conserve) for the vacuuming to be done right. The foods you mention that is sold without refrigeration, and without checking the ingredients for preservatives makes me think that yes some type of preservative is used. Something as natural as a bath in Citric Acid will help to keep colors from darkening, and does help with spoilage. The amounts of citric acid added varies with each individual item bathed. Vinegar’s acidic value is also useful as a bacteria deterrent. Again that varies with individual food and the amounts of vinegar.
Personally, I think I would try bagging up rice, vacuum seal it, leave it on the counter for 2-4 days then open up the bag and check it for smell, texture, and moisture. If it smells off, gets mushy, and is sticky to the touch it is spoiled, and of course would need to be preserved with some kind of additive. Again, I would try that with the beans as well.
Additives can be natural and from the earth as well.
I know there are “natural” additives out there as I have ordered these “Miracle Noodles” which are not refrigerated and keep for months and up to a year on the shelf. (I research the liquid the noodles came packed in, and it was very natural, and allowed by Federal Regulations to be used for food) The noodles came with explicit instructions as to the washing of the noodles then rinsing for 5 full minutes. Yes you needed to do that, because the natural liquid that is used in the noodles….is the nastiest smelling stuff you can imagine. Rinsing under cold running water for the full time is required if you intended to eat the rubber noodles. Lots of plus’ in the type of noodles sold as Miracle Noodles, but we couldn’t get thru the rubbery texture. No calories, or cholesterol was why I bought them. I made my husband eat them 3 times before he said no more, send them back.
Good luck, as you have an excellent idea.

what are the causes of heat stroke and how can i cure it?

water maker answers:

Heat stroke is the most severe form of heat illness. It can occur even in people who are not exercising, if the weather is hot enough. These people have warm, flushed skin, and usually do not sweat. Athletes who have heat stroke after vigorous exercise in hot weather, though, may still be sweating considerably. Whether exercise-related or not, though, a person with heat stroke usually has a very high temeperature (106 degrees F or higher), and may be delirious, unconscious, or having seizures. These patients need to have their temperature reduced quickly, often with ice packs, and must also be given IV fluids for rehydration; they must be taken to the hospital as quickly as possible (EMS is appropriate here), and may have to stay in the hospital for observation since many different body organs can fail in heat stroke.
Preventing Heat-Related Illnesses

You can prevent heat-related illnesses. The important thing is to stay well-hydrated, to make sure that your body can get rid of extra heat, and to be sensible about exertion in hot, humid weather.

Your sweat is your body’s main system for getting rid of extra heat. When you sweat, and the water evaporates from your skin, the heat that evaporates the sweat comes mainly from your skin. As long as blood is flowing properly to your skin, extra heat from the core of your body is “pumped” to the skin and removed by sweat evaporation. If you do not sweat enough, you cannot get rid of extra heat well, and you also can’t get rid of heat as well if blood is not flowing to the skin. Dehydration will make it harder for you to cool of in two ways: if you are dehydrated you won’t sweat as much, and your body will try to keep blood away from the skin to keep your blood pressure at the right level in the core of your body. But, since you lose water when you sweat, you must make up that water to keep from becoming dehydrated. If the air is humid, it’s harder for your sweat to evaporate — this means that your body cannot get rid of extra heat as well when it’s muggy as it can when it’s relatively dry.

The best fluid to drink when you are sweating is water. Although there is a little salt in your sweat, you don’t really lose that much salt with your sweat, except in special circumstances; taking salt tablets may raise your body’s sodium level to hazardous levels. (Your doctor can tell you whether or not you need extra salt.) “Sport drinks” such as Gatorade® will also work, but water is usually easier to obtain. And any kind of drinkable water — tap water or bottled spring water — will work; there are bottled waters around that have extra minerals and other things, and in some cases they may be beneficial for you, but plain water works just fine.

It’s also important to be sensible about how much you exert yourself in hot weather. The hotter and more humid it is, the harder it will be for you to get rid of excess heat. The clothing you wear makes a difference, too: the less clothing you have on, and the lighter that clothing is, the easier you can cool off. Football players are notoriously prone to heat illness, since football uniforms cover nearly the whole body, and since football practice usually begins in late summer when the temperature outside is highest. Therefore, football players should pay extra attention to the fluids they drink and lose: teams should consider limiting practice and wearing light clothing for practice on very hot days, and athletes should be able to drink all the water they want during practice.

Hope this is all the info u need!

Cheers!

water maker answers:

If the bottles are still sealed, and have been stored in a fairly constant temperature, away from light, the rum should be good (technically) forever. They find still-drinkable wine in Egyptian tombs.

If you (or anyone) intend to drink some of it, check it before you open the bottle. If there’s sediment that doesn’t belong there, or if the liquid level is lower than it should be, it means there’s air getting into the bottle somehow. Then I’d throw it out.

Is rain water drinkable?

Is rain water drinkable? Im interested in extreme survival in all climates. So is it okay to drink rain water? I know all fresh water is edible, better to boil it first. But what about agua from the sky

water maker answers:

People all over the world drink rainwater, and so can you, as long as you collect it from clean surfaces and store in in a clean container.

The evaporation process that moves water from Earth’s surface back to the air is in all important respects equivalent to distillation. The amount of pollution in the air in almost any location that is not immediately downwind of an industrial complex is very small, and the solubilities of the pollutants in water is sufficiently low that in the process of condensation and airfall, very little contamination enters the water.

Very close to oceans, you can pick up aersol salts at very low concentrations, but really too low to even notice. Immediately downwind from major salars (evaporative lakes in desert environments), high winds from convective storms may put aerosol salts into local rainwater also, but this is very localized. For all practical purposes, recontamination in your collection process (including contact with your dirty hands and mouth) are far the greatest risk to rainwater as a potable source.

There’s a very good and thorough collection of rainwater chemical analyses around the world in Table 3.1 – Composition of Precipitation – World, pages 69-73, in EK Berner and RA Berner, 1996. Global Environment – Water, Air, and Geochemical Cycles. Prentice Hall Publishers, Upper Saddle River, NJ (USA). I’m sure your local reference librarian can help you find a copy.

Yes and no, what you gather it from or with may have contamination. Also is some areas the PH balance after falling through the air could have too high of an acid content although drinkable in a pinch not very good for you. Also the assumption that all fresh water is safe is totally false even boiling may not make the water drinkable you still need a good quality filtration system. I have a first need filtration system been using that for 20+ years. REI has an article for you to read on the subject for more great info

Honey is very easy to brew.

2-3lbs of honey/gal of water
1-2 tea bags
1-2 tablespoons of yeast (wine yeast is good but bread yeast works just fine too)
container to heat and a container with an air lock but you can get by with a cap that isn’t screwed on tight (you want gas to get out but keep air and insects out

Heat the water, tea bags and the honey til steaming and then let cool to 100F or lower, mix in yeast. Use a mixer to aerate the mixture and pour it into your container with the air lock or cap.

Let it set for a few weeks or longer. At this point it is drinkable

Pour it into a 2 liter pop bottle (clean of course) and let it set another week. Now it will have some carbonation too.

Use 1/2 honey 1/2 sugar if you want to make it even cheaper.

water maker answers:

Realistically, with good diet and exercise, you can expect to lose an average of 1-2 pounds of fat a week. (side note: if you monitor your weight, you will probably notice that it fluctuates a lot even throughout the day. This is just water weight and not an actual representation of weight loss. For your most accurate weight, weigh yourself right after you wake up and before you eat or drink anything, even water). If we do the math, we can assume that you can lose almost 50 pounds in 6 months – a huge amount, when you consider that it’s 50 pounds of fat you’re talking about. Honestly, you just need to eat lots of fruits and vegetables and drink lots of water (which it sounds like you already do, kudos! ). You also need to be doing cardio every day. Running is best, but if you’re like me you probably hate it, so you can also bike, swim, power walk, or do any other activity that gets your heart pumping. Circuit training is really fabulous, and you can change up your cardio if you easily get bored with workouts. Also, if you have an iPhone/iPod touch, download the livestrong calorie tracking app. It’s great and keeps you on track as long as you stick with it! Good luck and you are not alone, believe me:)

Eating that little of an amount is foolish and not eating breakfast is even worse. Eating like that will slow your metabolism down and everything you put in your body will pretty much stay in your body because it’s malnourished. Try the calorie counter app, thats what I use and it will give you a more realistic approach to losing a pound or two a week without starving yourself. You should be eating every 3-4 hours smaller portioned meals like 300-400 calories. Trust me you’ll feel great and lose weight without even trying.
water maker answers:

I drink water and a bunch of delicious teas. Some are as sweet as fruit juice! Try Tazo Passion, Stash Raspberry White (but pull the teabag out in less than a minute), and Tazo Wild Sweet Orange for sweet, fruity drinks that are low- or no-calorie. They all claim to be zero calories, but they’re so sweet I’m not sure I believe it.

I also love to mix seltzer water with any kind of fruit juice. It’s like pop meets fruit juice, but has less sugar than both! See how much fruit juice you need to add to get it sweet and flavorful enough for you. For me, it’s about 1/4-1/3. Or I squeeze a bunch of lemons in for a tart treat.

I drink milk once in a while, or add soy or rice milk to my tea, but very rarely. I like it, it’s just not what I’m used to drinking. I grab chocolate milk at the store if I’m crazy hungry and can’t be bothered with chewing.

Tea doesn’t really add nutrition that I’m aware of, but it’s relaxing and helps with congestion, stress, and sore throat! Just make sure not to overdo the caffeine.

Drink it within 10 minutes of juicing coz after that all the nutrients die (so things like V8 aren’t good for you and don’t really give you 2 serves of veggies, since the nutrients are dead)

water maker answers:

You need to choose juices that have 100% juice and no added sugar. Several “healthy” juices out on the market are juice cocktails, meaning there is added sugar and added calories. Make sure you steer clear of these. You can also check out your local health food or natural food store and get freshly juiced juices.

If you’re not big on juices but want some pizazz to your water you can try some Crystal Light individual pouches that you add to your water bottle. These are fairly low in calories.

How can I survive in my house a few days with no running water. Any tips?

There is a spicket outside I can use to bring water up, and I can buy some water at the store. I just can’t afford to get my water turned back on yet without starving!

Any tips? Can anyone tell me very step by step how to flush a toilet with no running water, just pouring?

Thanks!

water maker answers:

With most toilets it takes about two gallons of water to flush the toilet, say for a number two, less for just urine.
You can use the water from you outdoor spigot, for most things, provided that what you use to collect the water is clean.
Showering and bathing, will be a lot harder. So it will be a return to the days of old. Where you fill a sink with water and use soap and a cloth to clean yourself. And do your hair.
See if you can have a friend or neighbor, to allow you to shower.
If you are that broke, rather than spending money on bottled water than you can’t afford. Buy a Brita bottle with a filter, and use that for drinking water.
I’d talk to the Water company, about any special deals they may have to service people in your circumstances. Most utility companies have some sort of Angel, program, to help those who are needy. It’s worth making a call to them. You have nothing to lose.

What community service activities do you recommend ?

I want to go to college for international affairs, and I want some community service or other activities that go with a degree in international affairs. Any suggestions?

water maker answers:

All types of community service look good for colleges. You can always show that you can improve your own area and branch out once at the school of your choice.

Why don’t you go on a fun, inexpensive shopping trip and pick up nice shower gels, soaps, lotions, cute clothes, cosmetics…basically anything that any female would like. Box it all up and mail it to your local women’s shelter.

You could also buy a package of unisex bar soap like Ivory and distribute it to homeless people in your town. Make sandwiches, bring along some bottled water, and feed the homeless!

Or, save a life and donate blood!

Oh, and donate your used toiletries (shampoo, conditioner, lotion, shower gel, and soap)! I was thinking that you might want to check out Clean The World ( http://www.cleantheworld.org ) and perhaps send the remnants of your used toiletries to them via Central Care Mission. I’m a big fan of fun bath products, but any that don’t suit my fancy, or the last bits of the soap bars, get sent to them to help prevent disease and death in Third World countries.

water maker answers:

You are not set up with a crime lab.
I would cancel the water bottle service in favor of getting a water filter that attaches to the faucet… A lot cheaper.
Hold a house meeting and tell them what is happening and why the water bottle service has been canceled. Let someone else buy the bottled water if they want it.

You should also consider hitting the hardware store to pick up a couple of replacement doorknobs with keyed locks… One for your bedroom door and the other for your closet door. Wear the only keys around your neck.

It sounds like you have a bunchload of extended family that have invaded. At some point, you and your mother need to sit down with all these extra people and tell them they need to be making plans to launch out of there… And issue a firm move-out date they must be out by, followed by forcible eviction by a sheriff’s deputy.
I would also stop the cable TV service and pare-down on purchasing groceries to make them step up and pay their own way.
Keep your favorite snacks locked in your closet.

AFRICA a world with hunger and thirst?

AFRICA:
I chose Africa becouse I have been there and I saw how it really looks like. A lot of people don,t even know what is relly happening there, becouse most of the turists go in the hotels and enjoy them selves, while there is hunger and the need for water all aorund them… but it is so cenzured that they don,t see it.
Africa is the world’s second largest and second most populated continent after Asia.
With 1.0 billion people it has about 14.72% of the world’s human population.
The continent is surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea to the north, both the Suez Canal and the Red Sea along the Sinai Peninsula to the northeast, the Indian Ocean to the southeast, and the Atlantic Ocean to the west.
Threw history Africa was colonized and it had a big effect on it,s economical and industrial development.
In Africa there are mostly black people which have been thew history criticized and held as an lower species.
There had been rasizem (apartheid) and the Africans were used as slaves. Even in these days they havent solved the problem of slavery yet.
Also in places like Sudan there are fights for water and oil, but in our days the fight is bigger for drinkable water which will be in the future one of biggest problems the humanrace will have to solve.
There is also the problem with hunger and money crises. A lot of (black)children that live there have big stomaches becouse they are filled with air that is an result of little food . Also children have bad higien and they are surounded by flyes.
A shocking data is that every day 3000 children under the age of 5 die in Africa from hunger and thirst.

I really hope that problems like hunger, thirst, higien etc. Will be solved soon becouse we have to make the world better not just for ourselves but also for other people!

Wind is in abundant supply and can be accessed virtually anywhere in the world.

Water – that is, usable water – is getting in shorter and shorter supply. 96% of the world’s water is found in the oceans and is highly saline (salty).

Ground water, fresh water lakes, and rivers account for another 3.5% approx. Ultimately 99.5% of all the water on earth is not easily available for human and animal consumption.

The World Health Organization (info on their website) sees a coming crisis in the world’s access to usable, drinkable, potable water. It is one of the greatest needs currently for third world nations… And then there’s all that watering of golf course greens… (I digress… I love golf – it’s a guilty pleasure as an environmentalist!)

So – even though there are about 6.1 Billion people on the planet (and growing) – there are already over 1 Billion without access to potable water meaning dealing with diarrhea, schistosomiasis, or trachoma, or infestation with ascaris, guinea worm, or hookworm… All associated with poor drinking water and inadequate sanitation.

Wind power is the cleanest energy to produce and the only quibble some may have is the death of birds from the windmills – BUT – there are far more deaths in one country from powerlines than there would be if the whole world full of the wind turbines required.

See below for an AMAZING, comprehensive study as to why Wind turbines are best and Ethanol is worse than the gasoline of today. I am now a Wind-Energy convert and have ditched my prior long-standing preference for Ethanol and bio-diesel fuels. I hope this study gets the attention it deserves because Ethanol will be a bigger air polluter than gasoline.

Again, wind turbines = the cleanest energy possible without the misperceived fears that nuclear energy can convey.

Sounds like quite the challenge,,and thanks for being there, mom. Perhaps think of the pilgrims in America,, the way they worked together, pooled resourses, and the evolution of the U.S. Constitution, based on liberty, for all, yet , justice. I would explain a plausable supply of breathable air, cultivation of fish, and sea plants,,( strech the imagination, to include something like under water corn??), maybe trained dolphins for transportation?( but, to where?) Housing would need to be addressed, as well as employment, services like gabage disposal. Elections, law enforcement,,everything we have here, would need to be addressed. Dam,,glad it is not me, with this challenge! Sponge bob square pants for mayor?? Hope you will give her some hints, about society,,but,, I am sure the idea is to get her to think on her own!! ( good luck, girl!)

What kind of fire are you talking about – in-house or bush fire?

For the in-house fire:
- anything you need to get out _fast_, on the shortest way. That may include the smoke hood that was already mentioned and/or a rope ladder (or similar) if you live/sleep in an upstairs room.

For the bush fire:
- anything you need to get out _fast_. Usually, this would boil down to a cellphone w/ GPS.

From your list:
drop the water, sunscreen, sunglasses, tea towel, bandage. They’re not essential to survival. Sunscreen and -glasses won’t help you with respect to the fire, and once you’re out, a sunburn is survivable. One bottle of water won’t make a big difference for survivability, either – unless you’re out in the outback. And even then, a cellphone (or satellite phone) would be the better option. The tea towel is an especially bad idea – it won’t protect you from the smoke gases, but might lull you in a false sense of security. In fact, not even a gas mask would protect you – you’d need a full rebreather kit with compressed air bottle. Bandage – hmmm, do you have any first-aid training? If yes, you know that it’s next to useless on its own. If you think you know what to do with it, get a small first aid kit instead, perhaps something like this: http://www.amazon.co.uk/M-mp1063-Compact-First-Aid/dp/B003JZ0KM6/ . In fact, the whistles and emergency blankets shown under ‘frequently bought together’ might make a good add-on.

Clothes: definitely yes. Robust hiking stuff like you listed is a good idea. An electric torch may also come in useful, however, it also requires maintenance. Unless you get an expensive one that uses Lithium batteries, you’ll have to check (or better replace) the batteries every 12 months (Lithium batteries are good for >10 years). Or see if you can find one with a hand crank – or a shake light. It won’t be as robust or give out as much light as a battery operated one, but you won’t have to worry about the batteries.

Since you’re a teenager, ID, credit card or enough money to pay cab & hotel probably won’t be possible – however, 10 dollars or so to call someone and/or buy some small items you may have lost or missed may come in handy.

If you’re still paranoid about the water, get one of those http://www.amazon.com/Frontier-Emergency-Disaster-Preparedness-Survival/dp/B0014EAYUM or similar. It will weigh less than a bar of chocolate (oops, right – add one of those, too – both for nutrition and mental support, no joke) and will give you much more drinkable water than your one bottle.

Most important: get training. You may be old enough for first aid training, so check with your local red cross if something like that is available for you.

I was watching This Old House last night in the wee hours of the morning and they were putting in a septic system in an old house. They have systems that don’t have to be put underground and the one they put in is a complete processing system that takes in your leavings and by the end of the process the water is drinkable. I’m sure they are expensive but there are many choices and most of the better ones add air to the bacteria so that it all processes quickly. I’m sure all of these are online.

econ problem help!?

William argues that unless population growth and economic growth are halted, the world will soon run out of edible food, drinkable water, and breathable air because the world faces a fixed amount of these natural resources. William concludes that real GDP cannot increase indefinitely.

Which of the following are appropriate rebuttals to William’s conclusion?

I. The Earth can hold an infinite number of people.

II. Market forces recognize shortages and make necessary adjustments to efficiently allocate scarce resources.

III. Increases in real GDP can come about through producing goods and services that are of higher quality rather than of higher quantity.

IV. Increases in wealth and productivity expand society’s capacity to safeguard the environment.

      A. None of these are flaws in his conclusion

Which is the solution to penguins problems “they’re dying”!!?

there must be a solution to this problem, we must find it quick before all penguins die

water maker answers:

Its global warming (notice lowercase). Whether we as a species are involved or not, the earth is slowly getting hotter. There is a documented increase of the average temperature of a few degrees a year. This is reeking havoc in the poles as the ice is melting and animals are getting overheated (like penguins).

The solution (in my mind) is to stop polluting the air, water and earth in general and switch to safe, renewable, biodegradable, forms of energy. Hydrogen can power scooters, golf carts and even cars, and the only by-product is clean, pure, drinkable water. As for electricity, between hydro-electric sources, solar panels and wind turbines in respective locations, can supply all the energy needed.

I am heard that i can make up a solution to clean it with 25% white vinegar and 75%water

water maker answers:

No, rain water is not distilled at all. It has all the pollutants that are in the air, and on your roof.
To distill water, you’d have to heat it to vaporize it, then condense it through cooling. Then you collect the condensation into a pure surface.
The vinegar/water mix you are referring to is to make some sort of water drinkable, but not pure.
