Jenny asks…
How can milk be kept in an unopened pack for months?
Is it really because of the package that prevents any air getting to the milk? Or maybe it is because of something that is added during the production process.
I cannot believe that milk (in a closed pack) may remain drinkable for moths without anything unhealthy added!
Please explain
water maker answers:
What is the reason for milk to spoil so fast once opened because, of the the very high moisture content, along with the abundant supply of nutrients (so that bacteria can eat and grow!). The pH value of milk is 6.7; this means that it is slightly acidic, but very close to being neutral. On top of all these reasons, if the temperature is just right (25-38 C happens to be the most suitable temperature range for bacteria to thrive), milk will spoil fast. The bacteria or micro-organisms in milk belong to three categories; those that spoil the milk, those that cause infections and diseases in humans, and those that bring about natural fermentation (for example, those involved in converting milk to curd). If the milk is spoiled, we do not consume it. So, we do not have to worry about these bacteria causing
infections in us. But what about bacteria in good milk? Before 1930s, milk and milk products were the most important vehicles of diseases such as typhoid, tuberculosis and diptheria. As you all know, we can protect ourselves against this problem by pasteurization of milk.

Who actually thinks freshwatet is slowly being used up?
Its simple science. What happens when you take salt water and boil it? The vapor is pure clean water that is drinkable. The same thing with the ocean the sun heats it and vapor rises into the air and air currents push it to land which causes rain.
water maker answers:
Oh Lordy. Don’t tell me they are all going to start that up again. We were supposed to be out of fresh water back in the sixties. New York was seriously planning on getting an ice berg, bringing it into their harbor and tapping it for water.
This recycling of bogeymen is getting nauseating.

How to keep from being overheated?
I am just so overheated right now. Idk. Its only like 75 outsjde but im sweating. I am wearing shorts and a tshirt and my hair is up and the air conditioning and fans are on but its not helping.
I live in PA so we are havjng flooding issues and our water isnt drinkable right now. How can i cool down?! We are moving today too. So i will probably start to sweat more soon.
water maker answers:
You may be overheated but it may be something else. It you feel like this for more than a day, then you should probably see a doctor. To cool down, you could use some ice packs, you really should drink water, so if you have to, go to the store and get some water bottles.

Sandra asks…
Is sand or mesh a better water filter?
I am working on an engineering project that uses PVC pipe, sand, and mesh to filter dirty water to make it drinkable. Would the sand or the mesh work better for removing most of the contaminants? Which would be more efficient for removing the contaminants while working quickly?
water maker answers:
Edited
Screen mesh as a first stage will handle leaves, snapping turtles and little boys. Specialized swimming pool filter sand can fiter to around 10- 12 microns which may handle most of the protozoa. Diatomaceous earth will filter to around 1 micron and can strain some of the Coliform bacteria. But microbe filtration to well below one micron is recommended for potable water quality assurance. ( Salt and other dissolved contaminants is another issue.) Activated charcoal can be added in the last stage, after the diatomaceous earth.
Some air filters (used in hospitals and nuclear facilities) are sub-micron rated. It would be interesting to layer several pieces of that media and see how it works on water. I believe that media material is felted glass fiber. ( This is getting interesting. . Why don’t you Yahoo mail me. See profile.)
Portable, potable water filters are aviable commercially but they use a much more sophisticated media than the above.
But then that takes all the fun out of building one.
