Nancy asks…
I just bought a 2 quart army canteen, and it’s one of the squishy ones. Is it safe to drink from? It smells…
Canteens are usually pretty smelly, but I figure it is still drinkable. I washed it with a light dish soap, and it’s still a little smelly, but it should be safe to drink from, right?
water maker answers:
Depends on what the smell is coming from. To make sure, try soaking in a sink full of hot water with about a cup of bleach in it. After soaking, allow it to air dry fully (to let the bleach evaporate) before using. After that, any bacteria should be dealt with making it safe to drink from.

Lizzie asks…
How to make the coolest invention using electricity?
For a school project!
water maker answers:
Are you really polling the community for a novel new use for electricity or do you just need a cool project that uses electricity? What is the grade-level and comfort level with electricity? Also, time-frame and budget?
A fun, but very dangerous, project involves high voltage electricity to ionize air creating an air current to levitate a light paper craft. It can be made with some wire and a neon-sign transformer on the reasonably cheap but high danger scale.
Also with high voltage you can build an ozone generator. Ozone can be used to sterilize water. An idea I had regarding third-world countries was to use solar panels to store power and a transformer to ramp up the voltage and pass ozone through the water to kill bacteria and make it drinkable.
If you want try something visually appealing, you could do something like making an electromagnet with variable strength based on music input or some other variation. Place the electromagnet under a sheet of paper with iron shavings and play back the music and watch the iron shavings attempt to align to the constantly shifting magnetic fields.

William asks…
What would be the best way to transfer wate from a bay and into a home or business and make it drinkable?
without polluting the air
water maker answers:
Well you can use a very expensive desalinator pump, like the poster above says- it separates the salt from the water. Or you can distill it, boil the water, trap the vapor and run it in piping cool it and it`ll be fresh water, the salt and impurities will remain in the original pot/vat. Google: “Solar Still”

Joseph asks…
If rain water is drinkable then why doesn’t everyone place buckets outside so they won’t have to pay forwater?
Oh wow that makes complete sense, I guess pollution and contamination from power plants didn’t really cross my mind.
water maker answers:
Could you drink rainwater, yes. Should U….NO. Unfortunately due to mass pollution of the air around the globe, rain water is basically contaminated with all sorts of toxic and poisonous chemicals agents. Ever heard of ACID RAIN? Unless U have a state of the art, rainwater collection and chemical filtration system, rainwater is just too polluted and contaminated to drink straight up.
